Welcome to our Eco News section... Environmental, green and ethical - news from our listed companies, plus topical national & international articles from around the globe ........ August 2008 |

Nigel's Eco Store asked some of the web’s leading environmental bloggers and social media users to name their favourite green sites in a number of different categories.
The mission in creating the Green Web Awards was to find the people and organisations who are in the vanguard of creating a greener future online and not just to reward the sites with the biggest budgets, but to find websites that are hidden gems, community-based sites and ones that make use of the power of the internet.
"The web is now a central part of our lives. More than any medium today, the web has the power to create communities that can change the world, to inform, and to shape opinion.
We believe that what we can achieve online today will have a massive influence on what the world becomes tomorrow.." said Nigel Berman, MD of Nigel's Eco Store.
And the Winners are...
The judges voted for sites in 12 categories, with winners and runners up in each:
Green Travel - Responsible Travel
Green Site for Kids - Recycle Zone

Wind Overtakes Water in Britain's Green Energy Mix
Wind supplied more of Britain's electricity that water for the first time last year, while power generators preferred gas to coal and nuclear output continued to decline, according to new government data.
Five percent of Britain's electricity came from renewable sources in 2007, up from 4.6 percent in 2006, as more wind farms started feeding clean electricity into the network, helping cut the country's carbon emissions.
"For the first time generation from wind exceeded generation from hydro and became the largest renewables technology in terms of electricity generated," the industry ministry said in its annual energy statistics.
Britain's gas production fell for the seventh consecutive year, down 10% in 2007.
Domestic coal production fell 6 percent, while imports fell by 13 percent from a record high in 2006, because of lower demand from electricity generators.
Nuclear power's contribution to Britain's power supply shrank to 15 percent, its lowest level since 1987, because of lengthy maintenance and repair work at many of the country's ageing nuclear power plants.
A 27-percent increase in installed wind power capacity helped boost green energy output and make up for some of the loss in carbon-free electricity from the nuclear sector.
Power consumption by British industry fell by 0.5 percent while households used 1.2 percent less electricity.

My Zero Waste
Join a family of four in the UK, as they set themselves a zero waste challenge!
Mr, Mrs, Little Miss and Pussus Green are increasing their recycling and changing their shopping habits with the intention of having NOTHING to put out for landfill each week.
They started at the beginning of June 2008 with an 'average' 1 metal dustbin & 2 swing bin liners full of rubbish per week heading for the landfill.
In five short weeks, they've reduced this to just 200 grams of rubbish - that's one small carrier bag's worth!

During the first week in September, they will be tackling their first official 'Zero Waste Week'. To celebrate this, they have some wonderful companies offering generous prizes every day that week. All the prizes are either recycled, recyclable or help readers to increase their own recycling in some way.
On their site, you can follow their daily progress, take part in polls, read product reviews, join in with their monthly challenge, find discounts and promotions and leave your comments. There are also lots of informative articles about how YOU can reduce your weekly rubbish too.
The site is light hearted and fun but with a serious message. Be sure to follow their progress leading up to Zero Waste Week and be in with a change of getting some great prizes. myzerowaste.com |

Climate Camp
South East MEP and Green activist Dr Caroline Lucas will be joining protesters at Climate Camp 2008 at Kingsnorth in Kent to rally against the Government’s continued commitment to unsustainable fossil fuels and its failure to adapt to tough environmental and economic conditions.
Speaking ahead of the Camp, Dr Lucas said: “I am delighted to be taking part in Climate Camp this year, and where better to highlight the Government’s failure to provide leadership on climate change than Kingsnorth, the proposed location for the first coal fired power station in Britain for 30 years.
“A new coal facility at Kingsnorth would emit up to 8 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere each year – and potentially keep doing so for 50 years.
That annual emissions figure is as much C02 as the world's 24 lowest emitting countries combined.
On 3 August, Dr Lucas will take part in a rally on incineration and climate change. Then on 4 August, she will address fellow Climate Campers on the triple crisis of food price rises, economic downturn and climate change facing governments the world over, and what lies ahead for conventional capitalist economics.
She continued: “Our political leaders seem unable to grasp a more radical social and environmental agenda. They can no longer commit to endless free market economic growth, which has played a huge part in the rapid generation of damaging climate emissions, and then wring their hands about climate change.
“The Government should be showing real leadership in this debate, with measures to tackle rising energy costs and fuel poverty, as well as initiating major investment in energy efficiency, renewables and decentralised energy. According to its own figures, we could achieve a 30% reduction in energy use in the UK through existing efficiency measures alone.”
This year's Climate Camp will be held near the Kingsnorth coal fired power station on the Medway estuary in Kent from 3-11th of August. www.climatecamp.org.uk

Natural Friends ~ a green oasis in a desert of dating
As the UK’s very first ‘green’ friendship and introduction agency, Natural Friends has helped over 40 thousand people meet a perfect partner. Now, its ethical approach is uniting more singles than ever before…
The reason for this upturn in trends is perhaps less to do with dating and more to do with lifestyle expectations in today’s eco-aware world.
Far from jumping on the green bandwagon, Natural Friends was the first of its kind and rightly proud of its values.
Natural attraction:
Finding love, friendship and happiness is often about living a life you love with people who share your passions. Be it friends who reflect your positive philosophy, relationships that won’t compromise your values or activities that matter most to you.
Love is in the air: And the environment… online dating with a difference because it exists for those who want to make a difference.
Who joins?: Natural Friends members must be single, non-smoking and typically ‘green’, over the age of 21, and, of course, there is no upper age limit. There is a broad membership of intelligent, successful and discerning members with many common interests from Animal welfare to Zen Buddhism.
Low carbon dating: Natural Friends was the first and is still one of the best eco-friendly specialist introductions agencies.
It’s a world away from the disheartening dating websites and pushy profiles that leave many feeling increasingly isolated. Once registered, members are free to contact as many people as they wish. The Natural Friends website is secure and confidential and offers a free search facility for those wishing to take their time.Visit www.natural-friends.com to register.
