Airplot - i am an owner

Greenpeace have bought a piece of land slap bang in the middle of the proposed third runway site at Heathrow. But to stop the runway getting built they need your help.

The government plans to go ahead with airport expansion across the country even though this means we'll have no hope of meeting our climate emission targets.

They've bought the land with Oscar winning actress Emma Thompson, comedian Alistair McGowan and prospective Tory parliamentary candidate Zac Goldsmith. Allthingseco has already signed up and you can too. It's not a financial thing, but you will be included as an owner on the legal deed of trust. www.greenpeace.org.uk

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia with 2.2 million homes and businesses turning their lights off for one whole hour. Only a year later and this event had become a global sustainability movement with up to 100 million people across 35 countries participating.

In 2009, at 8.30pm on March 28, we are asking people across the world to turn off their lights and join together in creating the vital conversation about the future of our precious planet. Everyone can make a difference.

It’s as simple as a flick of the switch. Join us for Earth Hour 2009.

In Spring 2009 the Government will publish a Renewable Energy Strategy. Friends of the Earth would like you to join the energy revolution today by asking your MP to support a strong and sustainable Renewable Energy Strategy.

Climate change is a problem we all must tackle together. The Government needs to know that people all over the country want them to act.

Tapping into the vast renewable energy potential of the sun, wind, tides and waves will help keep global temperatures in check, provide a secure and lasting energy supply, generate jobs and business.

Go to www.foe.co.uk/campaigns to find out how your can Join the Revolution.

By signing up to receive updates from Avaaz.org, members receive emails and text messages alerting them to new campaigns and opportunities to act online and offline, and to make a real difference on pressing global issues.

www.buynothingday.co.uk

Buy Nothing Day: Everything we buy has an impact on our planet. Buy Nothing Day highlights the environmental and ethical consequences of consumerism. The developed countries - only 20% of the world population are consuming over 80% of the earth's natural resources, causing a disproportionate level of environmental damage and unfair distribution of wealth.

As consumers we need to question the products we buy and challenge the companies who produce them. What are the true risks to the environment and developing countries? The argument is infinite - while it continues we should be looking for simple solutions - Buy Nothing Day is a good place to start.

BND is a day where you challenge yourself, your family and friends to switch off from shopping and tune into life. The rules are simple, for 24 hours you will detox from consumerism and live without shopping. Anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending!

www.campaigncc.org

Campaign against Climate Change: "Climate change is perhaps the gravest calamity our species has ever encountered. Its impact dwarfs that of any war, any plague, any famine we have confronted so far. It makes genocide and ethnic cleansing look like sideshows at the circus of human suffering."

The Campaign against Climate Change exists to push for the urgent and radical action we need to prevent the catastrophic destabilisation of global climate.

The CCC acts as an umbrella group for street demonstrations designed to maximise the greatest number of people in order to push for urgent action on climate change.

www.canvasyourmp.com

Canvas Your MP: This campaign exists to persuade the Government to set a binding target of an 80% cut in Britain's CO2 emissions by 2050, rather than the 60% that is currently contained in the Climate Change Bill. Launched by Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg MP and environment spokesperson Steve Webb MP, the campaign is open to anyone who believes that the climate change crisis is so urgent that we need to cut our CO2 emissions further and faster.

Its all about engaging your local MP, meeting him or her face to face, discussing your concerns about climate change and encouraging them to support proposals for a stronger Climate Change Bill. Specifically to set a target of 80% cuts in CO2 emissions by 2050 rather than the current 60% which just isn’t enough.

Later in the year MPs will be able to vote on whether to replace the 60% target with a tougher 80% target, which is supported by environmental groups and leading scientists.

www.cleanup.org.au

While participants are encouraged to hold environmental events on or around 'Clean Up the World Weekend' (always the 3rd weekend in September), Clean Up the World is also designed to provide support to groups undertaking activities throughout the year.

www.climaterush.co.uk

Climate Rush: Climate Rush is inspired by the actions of the Suffragettes 100 years ago, who showed that peaceful civil disobedience could inspire positive change. We are a diverse group of women and men who are determined to raise awareness of the biggest threat facing humanity today - that of Climate Change.

Our government acknowledges the huge problems we face from Climate Change, but carries on with business as usual. We demand DEEDS NOT WORDS because individual choice alone cannot curb CO2 emissions if we are to stop runaway global warming.

www.closethedoor.org.uk

Close the Door Campaign:

Close the Door is a well-organised campaign started by three women in Cambridge to get retailers to do simply that - Close their doors. Estimates suggest that shops waste around £300 million each year because their doors are left open. Many could slash their energy bills by 20-25% if they closed them. The excess use of energy is also contributing to climate change but could be solved by simply shutting the door and keeping the heat or air conditioning in.

By joining the Close the Door campaign, retailers can make a significant contribution to reducing their overall environmental footprint while lowering their own business costs. Find out if your area has joined the scheme - or if not, how to set your own action group.

Green Thing is new website community that makes it easy and enjoyable to be a bit greener. Every month you'll get a different Green Thing to do. All you have to do is do it. It aims to reach as many people as possible in as many countries as possible to do the Green Thing. A community of Green Things across the world will not only make a sizeable CO2 saving, it will encourage governments and businesses to do the Green Thing too.

Green Thing is an easy thing, because lots of small things can add up to more than a few big things; Green Thing is a creative thing, because entertainment is very inspiring and lectures a bit less so; Green Thing is a not-for-profit thing, because people are cynical about commercial or political agendas.

If Green Thing is about one thing, it's people power. If we all contribute to Green Thing, it will become as creative, credible and irresistible as it can be. To find out what Green Thing to do, see videos, get podcasts, and see how many countries are getting involved.

Green England Plastic Bag Tax Petition:

The Green Party have backed a campaign by Green England to follow Ireland's lead and place a tax on every plastic bag given out in the UK.

People in Britain use an average of 300 plastic bags every year. Each bag lasts up to 400 years, spending the vast majority of that time in a landfill site or strewn across the British countryside. People are becoming increasingly aware that we need to reduce our use of plastic bags.

In Ireland, a tax of 15cents per bag resulted in a 90% drop in plastic bag usage, and raised 3.5 million Euros which was spent on environmental projects.

The online petition at www.green-england.co.uk received over 10,000 signatures in less than two months. The petition is in support of a 10p tax on each plastic bag issued, to be spent explicitly on environmentally friendly projects.
